Afterlife
by Mark Jackley

And what would you give for one more
wet, chilled afternoon
in Northampton, crossing the diamond bleakness
of the parking lot,
black coffee and the embrace
of a diner waiting,
as the old brick buildings watch
with severe love?

In the cold, silver
currency of the rain,
friend, you would give nothing,
sweet, sweet nothing.
